Macropods

As part of the Australian Museum’s redevelopment of the Surviving Australia permanent gallery, Monkeystack was engaged to design and develop an interactive touchscreen experience that explores the evolutionary journey of Australia’s iconic kangaroo. Located at the centre of the exhibit, the installation pairs a responsive touchscreen with a large display, immersing visitors in a hands-on exploration of prehistoric through to modern Australian environments.
We designed the experience to centre on a dynamic “God’s kitchen” mechanic, inviting users to manipulate environmental conditions to see how different macropod species evolved over time – or became extinct. By translating complex research into an intuitive, interactive format, the experience increases visitor engagement and encourages longer dwell times within the gallery. For the Australian Museum, the project delivers a visually compelling and accessible way to present new scientific findings. The custom visualisations, many depicting research never before illustrated, enhance learning programs and strengthen the Museum’s storytelling across the Australia Through Time narrative.
