Monkeystack partnered with ILA – Immersive Light and Art to transform the hyperreal artworks of acclaimed Australian artist Matthew Quick into a large-scale immersive experience.
Designed for ILA’s iconic curved LED screen, the experience guided audiences through animated worlds inspired by recurring themes and visual motifs found throughout Quick’s work. A bespoke soundscape enhanced the journey, creating a rich multi-sensory environment that encouraged visitors to move beyond passive observation and step inside the artist’s creative world.
Working closely with ILA, project partners Hill Smith Art Advisory and Matthew Quick, our team explored how motion, scale, sound and storytelling could extend the artist’s vision beyond the canvas and into an entirely new medium.
Beginning with a collection of static artworks, we reimagined a curated selection of pieces as a series of dynamic digital environments, carefully preserving the intent and themes of the original pieces while embracing the scale and impact of immersive technology.
Presented as part of SALA Festival, the project blurred the boundaries between physical and digital art, demonstrating how creative, curatorial and technical expertise can come together to create new forms of audience engagement.
More than a digital interpretation of existing works, the experience represented a shared exploration of how immersive technology can deepen connections between artists and their audiences.
"For more than forty years HSAA have championed artists and collectors through traditional exhibition practice. This exhibition represents the next chapter - bringing together painting, sculpture and immersive digital storytelling to create an experience that honours the artist’s practice while expanding how audiences encounter contemporary painting."
