As part of the Australian War Memorial’s major redevelopment, Monkeystack delivered multimedia experiences for the new Middle East Gallery. The project explored complex and sensitive subject matter, requiring a careful balance between historical accuracy, accessibility and engaging visual storytelling with animation and projection.
Working closely with curators and subject matter experts throughout the design and development process, Monkeystack created experiences that help visitors understand both the global impacts of conflict and the personal experiences of those who served.
The Spread of ISIS
The Spread of ISIS is an animated media projection experience located within the North Iraq and Syria section of the gallery. Presented as two connected visual narratives, the experience combines a world map timeline with a regional map that tracks global events throughout the conflict.
Designed to transform an increasingly complex and fast-moving historical narrative into an accessible visitor experience, the production carefully balances information design, animation and storytelling. The result provides visitors with a broader understanding of the global impact of the conflict, demonstrating the overwhelming nature of a moment in history while remaining approachable for audiences with varying levels of prior knowledge.
T-Wall Projection
T-Wall Projection is a large-scale animated projection celebrating the artwork painted by Australian personnel on concrete T-Wall barriers throughout the Afghanistan conflict. Featuring unit insignias, personal messages, humour, pop-culture references and commemorative artworks, the experience highlights a unique form of personal expression created during service.
Monkeystack brought these artworks to life through subtle animation that preserved the authenticity and personality of the original pieces. Animated transitions and movement create an atmospheric gallery experience, inviting visitors to pause and connect with the human stories behind the artwork while showcasing an often-overlooked aspect of military life.
