Little Breakthrough Heroes: Big Talks For Little People

Flinders University College of Education, Psychology & Social Work commissioned Monkeystack to develop their anti-bullying P.E.A.C.E Pack intervention into a modern and engaging program as a part of the charity-first collaboration between Breakthrough Foundation and Little Heroes Foundation.

To give a little background on the beginnings of this project: The P.E.A.C.E. Pack, in its paper form, has been widely implemented and evaluated by teachers, students, principals, parents and school administrators from early childhood settings to secondary schools in Australia and internationally since it was pioneered in 2001.
The intervention is built from the P.E.A.C.E acronym: Preparation, Education, Action, Coping and Evaluation.

We produced a series of animations and a range of online content for the Little Breakthrough Heroes: Big Talks For Little People children’s mental health initiative, which supports children in the classroom and playground, as key resources within an educational program structured of eight weekly modules. Each module provides tools and resources to help with resilience, anti-bullying and opening up conversation on emotions, designed to be delivered by teachers or on a student self-help basis, highlighting the message that “Mental illness affects everyone… including children”.

When it comes to representing people living with disability, the personification of life and characteristics in a genuine manner is a step forward for all, rather than disassociating and detracting from reality. We believe animation can be the ultimate tool to demonstrate this, delivering a message understood and appreciated by a diverse audience.

Monkeystack have been working with Community Living Australia to produce a series of animated explainer videos on the topic ‘Abuse is Not OK’ to be presented in lived experience workshops and used as valuable user resources across their website and YouTube page.

The 7 animated chapters are easily accessible for their clients to watch, relate to and understand on a human level, as they are taken through subjects including ‘Understanding Human Rights’ and ‘Keeping Money Safe’.

Our work manifests Community Living Australia’s core value of integrity: their mission to deliver high quality services and provide a strong voice for people with disability to accomplish their life goals was communicated through being open, honest and embracing diversity in a very deliberate way.

As part of the Hedonism exhibit at MOD. (Museum of Discovery at the University of South Australia), Monkeystack produced F.A.B.L.E, an AR led experiential game about consent that visitors navigate via a phone app.

Welcome, Operative, to F.A.B.L.E. – aka the Federated Association of Believers, Leaders, and Explorers. Your mission is simple: teleport on board this foreign spaceship and connect with the alien. As you explore this new world, there are protocols to follow. Make sure you check in with the alien as you go, follow the principles of consent, and achieve a two-way flow of information that will benefit both of our races.   

Commissioned by MOD., Monkeystack set about creating an AR triggered app-based experience inspired by early 90s game graphics that is played by moving through the room. The experience can best be described as Barbarella meets the Muppets!

Monkeystack was engaged by Austroads to produce a library of Hazard Perception Test (HPT) videos and supporting material.

This library includes 197 animated videos for motorcycle riders as well as car drivers, providing materials for the world’s first motorcycle-specific HPT.

Shown to reduce the likelihood of crashes, the computer based HPT measures a driver’s or rider’s ability to recognise potentially dangerous situations on the road and respond appropriately. The test is part of the licensing process in NSW, South Australia, Victoria, Western Australia and Queensland.

The scripts for the videos were developed around the most problematic road and traffic hazards for novice drivers and motorcyclists. Chosen scenarios were determined through an analysis of mass crass data and in-depth crash investigation data  by the Centre for Automotive Safety Research.

This new content will modernise the HPTs currently in use, and provide jurisdictions that do not have a Hazard Perception Test the opportunity to introduce one to enhance their graduated licensing system.
